The history of Del Taco began when Ed Hackbarth and David Jameson opened the first location in Yermo, California in 1964. The two were longtime friends who wanted to open a business together. Hackbarth had previously opened a hamburger stand, so they decided to open a Mexican-style restaurant that would serve tacos, burritos, and more. The original menu was limited but consisted of tacos, burritos, and French fries.
In 1969, Hackbarth and Jameson opened a second location in Barstow, California and expanded the menu to include more Mexican-inspired dishes such as enchiladas, tostadas, and chile rellenos. In 1974, Del Taco was acquired by a group of investors and began to undergo a major expansion. This expansion included the opening of more locations in California and eventually nationwide.
In 1977, Del Taco introduced the “Del Combo Burrito” which quickly became a customer favorite. This burrito included refried beans, lettuce, cheese, and their signature “Del Sauce” and was the first burrito to be offered by the chain. Del Taco also began to offer breakfast items such as breakfast burritos and tacos in the 1980s.
In 1991 Del Taco began to focus on expanding the restaurant chain throughout the United States. This expansion included the addition of Drive-Thru windows at many of the locations. In 1997, Del Taco launched their “Value Menu” which offers items for $1. This menu has been a cornerstone of their business and has helped them keep prices low while still offering quality food.
