Church’s Chicken History
Church’s Chicken, one of the oldest and most beloved fried chicken eateries in the United States, has been a part of the American culinary landscape since 1952. Founded by George W. Church Sr. in San Antonio, Texas, Church’s Chicken has been serving up fried chicken, biscuits and sides for nearly seven decades.
The story of Church’s Chicken began in 1947 when George W. Church Sr. opened a small, two-table restaurant in San Antonio, Texas. At first, Church’s menu featured only fried chicken, but he quickly expanded his offerings to include fried shrimp, french fries, and hush puppies. By 1952, Church had opened two additional locations and renamed the restaurant Church’s Fried Chicken To Go.
In the 1960s, Church’s expanded its menu to include jalapeno poppers, honey-butter biscuits, and a variety of other fried treats. Church’s also began to franchise locations in other cities and states, rapidly becoming one of the most popular fried chicken restaurants in the United States. In the 1970s, Church’s began using a pressure fryer, a cooking technique that sealed in the flavor of the chicken as it cooked, making it even more delicious and popular.
In the 1980s, Church’s continued to expand, both in terms of its menu and its locations. It added fish and sandwiches to its menu, and began offering value meals and combo meals. During this time, Church’s also began to advertise on television and radio and opened more than 1,000 locations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Today, Church’s Chicken is still one of the most popular fried chicken restaurants in the world. It has more than 1,700 locations in more than 25 countries, and continues to offer its signature fried chicken, biscuits, and sides. Church’s is also known for its commitment to giving back to the communities it serves, donating millions of dollars and meals to local charities.
Throughout its nearly seven-decade history, Church’s Chicken has become one of the most beloved fried chicken restaurants in the world. Its delicious chicken, biscuits, and sides have become an American classic, and its commitment to giving back to the community continues to make it a favorite among fried chicken lovers everywhere.
