Taco Bell History
The history of Taco Bell is an interesting one – from its humble beginnings as a small, family-run business in 1962 to the global powerhouse it is today, it’s clear that Taco Bell has come a long way in the past fifty-eight years.
Taco Bell was founded in 1962 by Glen Bell, a WWII veteran and entrepreneur from California. After selling his first restaurant, he opened his first Taco Bell in Downey, California. He was inspired by the Mexican-style tacos he had tried in the area, and wanted to create a restaurant that served tacos in a fast-food style. The first Taco Bell was an instant success, and Glen Bell soon opened a second location in Torrance, California.
By the mid-1970s, Taco Bell had grown to more than 325 locations in the United States. In 1978, the company was sold to PepsiCo for $125 million. This move allowed Taco Bell to expand to a global audience, opening its first international locations in Canada and Japan.
Over the years, Taco Bell has evolved with the times, introducing new menu items and marketing campaigns to appeal to a broader customer base. In the late 1980s, Taco Bell launched its “Run for the Border” advertising campaign, which featured a number of iconic characters such as the “Chihuahua” and “Grande”. The campaign ran for more than a decade and helped solidify Taco Bell as a household name.
In the 2000s, Taco Bell continued to innovate with new menu items such as the “Crunchwrap Supreme” and “Doritos Locos Tacos”. The company also began to focus more on its digital presence and launched its “Live Mas” campaign in 2012, which was designed to appeal to millennials and Gen Z.
Today, Taco Bell is a global brand with more than 7,000 locations in 30 countries. It is also a leader in the fast-food industry, offering a variety of menu items such as tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and nachos. Taco Bell continues to be an innovator in the fast-food industry and is sure to be around for many more years to come.
