Jersey Mike’s History

Jersey Mike’s Subs is one of the most popular sub sandwich chains in the United States. Founded in 1956, the company has grown to more than 1,500 locations in 42 states and 4 countries. But despite its current success, Jersey Mike’s has had a long and storied history.

The original Jersey Mike’s Subs was founded in 1956 by Mike Brecher in a small shop in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Brecher was a master sandwich maker and was renowned for his unique sandwiches. He created unique combinations of meats, cheeses, and toppings that weren’t commonly found in other sub shops.

In 1971, Peter Cancro, a 17-year-old high school student, bought the original Jersey Mike’s from Brecher. Cancro had worked at the shop for nearly a year and had fallen in love with the food and the business. He quickly set about expanding the shop and soon opened multiple locations in New Jersey.

In 1987, Cancro decided to take his business to the next level and opened the first Jersey Mike’s franchise. This allowed him to expand the business to other states and countries and gave customers access to Jersey Mike’s delicious subs all over the world.

In 2000, Cancro created the Jersey Mike’s Foundation to provide grants and scholarships to educational and charitable organizations. In the same year, he opened the first Jersey Mike’s University, a comprehensive training program designed to ensure that all franchisees and their staff are knowledgeable and trained to deliver the same great food and service that customers have come to expect.

Today, Jersey Mike’s is one of the most popular sub sandwich chains in the United States. With over 1,500 locations in 42 states and 4 countries, the company continues to grow and expand. It’s easy to see why Jersey Mike’s has become such a success; it offers delicious subs made with quality ingredients, its staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and it gives back to the community. All of these factors combined have made Jersey Mike’s a leader in the sub sandwich industry.
